Treherbert Rugby Club Concert, 9th October09 PDF Print E-mail
RBF would like to thank the girls of Treherbert Rugby Club for raising awareness of breast cancer and a brilliant night out which raised a fabulous £1,500. There was non stop laughter as Debs did her comic act while singing and gyrating in her tutu and swinging her pompoms. A bit risqué at times, she kept the entertainment going throughout the night with comedy, singing, competitions and prize raffles while our Bev kept the wine flowing after she won herself a bottle. Even the men joined in with the pink theme and we had a fantastic reception for all our hard work with lots of promises to buy our calendar. Our thanks for all their hard work to the organisers: Jean Skym, Gaynor Griffiths, Karen Bessant, Lynwen Thomas, Emma Hughes and Ann Thompson, the Treherbert Rugby Club who gave the room free, paid for the artist and also made a donation and Debs for reducing her fee. Lists of raffle prize winners have been posted in the club and local shops. The cocktails proved popular as did the jugs which the Club have asked to be returned!

Walk with the Angels, Report 28th March, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Hundreds of people turned out to support Lisa Emmanuel and Julie Davies on their Walk with the Angels on Saturday 28th April to remember their daughters, Jade Louise and Rhiannon, who both sadly died in a car accident last year.

Jade was going to do a sponsored trek over the Brecon Beacons as part of her Duke of Edinburgh Award and chose Rhondda Breast Friends in memory of our trustee and their close family friend Donna Phillips who died of breast cancer the previous year.  Following on from Jade's wish, Lisa chose our Charity to benefit from the walk along with Ysgol Hen Felin which Rhiannon had previously supported.

It was a colourful scene with multicoloured fairies and young and old supporting the walk. The girl's story and Lisa's inspiration for the walk was relayed over the loudspeaker, celebrating the girls' lives and setting the scene for the walk. The girls favourite songs were played along the way and traffic was stopped for an hour as the colourful procession made its way from the Co-operative car park in Treorchy to the Hendrewen in Blaencwn. "Hello Diane" said a voice nearby as A.M. for Cynon Valley, Christine Chapman, strode out for the cause. Despite a few heavy showers, spirits were not dampened and everyone was there to support the families. Orange and purple balloons decorated houses and fences along the way and were set free at the end of the walk, sending all our thoughts up to the angels. I'm sure Jade and Rhiannon, two beautiful, caring girls were with us on the walk.

I felt for the parents, having lost my own daughter to breast cancer, and set up Rhondda Breast Friends with her friends in Helen's memory.  I also knew how much work was involved in organising the walk and was so pleased it was such a success. My congratulations go out to Lisa, Julie and families at a difficult time, Well Done, your daughters must be very proud of you!

Diane

Pink Day at Curves Health and Fitness Club PDF Print E-mail
Curves Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness MonthOn Tuesday, 28th October 08, Curves Health and fitness Club, Tonypandy hosted a "Pink" evening where they launched their new "liv self-exam aid" for breasts.

A video with Olivia Newton -John and her consultant promoted the aid then Diane, Chairwoman of Rhondda Breast Friends (RBF), gave a breast awareness talk with particular reference to younger women, many of whom were less inclined to self examine their breasts.  She also stressed that she believed the aid should be used in addition to bare hand examination, not replace it. Also to be aware of other changes, not just lumps and get them investigated without delay.

An Ann Summers Party followed with pink fairy cakes and wine flowing. The proceeds were donated to RBF. Curves are big supporters of breast cancer awareness and have raised substantial amounts for charities nationwide. Many thanks to Marcia, the cake makers, Tina and the clothes models and to all who supported the fun evening. Curves promotes exercise, weight control, and healthy eating as part of their fitness regime. Contact them on (01443) 422212
